Travel to Ayodhya

Vibhishana requested Rama: “If you are kind enough to oblige, please accept our hospitality, take part in the reception to honor you, stay here for the night along with Sita Devi and start your journey tomorrow.” Rama replied in an anxious tone: “My brother Bharatha is waiting for me in Ayodhya, expecting our return after the exile. I cannot do anything to rejoice without his company. Also, I cannot accept generosity from another country, nor can I take part in a reception in his absence. On the day I complete my fourteen years of exile, I must see him as he is waiting patiently for it. If I do not show up on time, he will jump in the fire the next day. So, I need to start right away. I have great admiration and love for you, but this is not the time to accept your invitation. But you can do one thing. Host a grand feast for my Vanara warriors. If they are pleased, it is as good as pleasing me. If you treat them well, it is like treating me with respect.” Vibhishana followed suit and gave the Vanaras the best possible food and drinks and spoiled them with gifts of gold and precious stones.

Vibhishana told Rama: “Here is the Pushpaka Vimana for you to go to Ayodhya without any delay. Lord Rama and Sita Devi got in the aircraft along with Lakshmana. Rama smiled and told Sugriva, Angada, and Vibhishana not to worry. “All our needs have been satisfied and Sugriva, rule your kingdom in Kishkindha happily. Oh! Vibhishana, reign Lanka and live with your relatives.” Then they told Rama: “We also would like to come with you to Ayodhya and pay our respects to your mothers and we want to take part in your coronation as well.” Rama agreed and they all got on the plane.

Pushpaka lifted off at Rama’s mental command and they started their journey. As the flight was progressing, Rama and pointed outside and told: “Sita, look, there is Trikuda Mountain, where the city of Lanka is situated. You can also see the battlefield where scores of bodies are seen strewn all over. The fight between the Rakshasas and Vanaras was intense, and many warriors from both sides fell. Ravana was killed with my arrows, because of you. I also killed Kumbhakarna and Makaraksha. Indrajit and Atikaya were killed by Lakshmana. So many others have also perished in the battle. See the dyke we made, and you are the reason behind this. This stretch of water is a place for pilgrims to get rid of their sins. You can also see Rameswaram, a temple I established for lord Maheswara. See Kishkindha, where I met Vibhishana. It is a beautiful city of Vanaras.”

Hearing this, Sita asked: “Shall we stop here and meet Tara and other Vanara ladies?  These Vanara men have been away from their family for a long while and their ladies must be waiting in anguish. Who would know the pain of separation more than me? Let us take them also to Ayodhya.” Rama obliged and the Vimana descended at Kishkindha. “Oh! Warriors, please go to your homes and get your ladies to come with us.” They came in huge numbers and the flight took off. Sita and the Vanara ladies exchanged pleasantries and they traveled happily.

Rama continued showing the areas they were covering as they flew. “Look, Sita, my dear, here is Rishyamooka Mountain. That is where I had to kill Bali. And see Panchavadi where we set up our Ashram. There you can see Agastya’s hermitage. Suthishna’s Ashram is next, and Chitrakooda Mountain is seen there. Remember, that’s where Bharatha came to see us. There is the Ashram of Sage Bharadwaja by the river Yamuna. See the shore of Ganga, where we met Guha and near that is river Sarayu and our city, Ayodhya.”

As if to acquiesce with Rama’s mind, the Vimana descended near the Bharadwaja Ashram. Rama went to the sage and paid his respects. “I hope everything is fine in Ayodhya. Are the mothers doing fine? How are my brothers and gurus?” Sage replied: “Rama, everybody is fine. Bharatha and Shathrughna, are living like monks, eating fruits and roots, wearing the garbs of mendicants, waiting for your return. Bharatha has kept your sandals on the throne and does daily pooja on them. He has been performing all the duties well, as an offering to your feet. With your blessings, I saw your life in exile including the abduction of Sita, meeting Sugriva, killing the Rakshasas, the epic battle, and Hanuman’s escapades and prowess in the battle. You are the Paramatma, the one reality without a beginning and an end.  You are Narayana, Lord Vishnu and Sita is Lakshmi Devi. Lakshmana is Anantha! You are the one who gives moksha to sadhakas. Please come to my Ashram and make it pious with your presence.” Rama obliged and they went into the sage’s hermitage, and everyone was pleased.

Hanuman and Bharatha

Rama asked Hanuman to go to Ayodhya and inform Bharatha that he is on his way. Hanuman, in the guise of a Brahmana, went to see Bharatha. He also met Guha on the way. He went to Nandigram, a village where Bharatha was living the life of a monk, although he was the ruler of a large kingdom. He was staying in a small hut, always chanting Rama’s name, along with Shatrughna and the ministers. Hanuman paid his respects and told him that it will be impossible to find a devotee more dedicated than Bharatha. “Oh! Blessed one, your brother will be here soon. He is coming in the Pushpaka Vimana, with Sita and Lakshmana, accompanied by the Vanara and Rakshasa armies led by Sugriva and Vibhishana, respectively. You can relax soon, seeing your brother, the victorious one, who killed Ravana, the mighty Rakshasa.”

Hearing this, Bharatha fainted for a moment, taken aback with exhilaration. He wept the tears of joy and embraced Hanuman kissing his forehead. “Who are you? a Deva or a human? You told me the most pleasing words that are honey to my ears. What will I give you as a gift to show my elation? You removed my sorrow, and nothing will be adequate as a reward. Tell me all about Rama. How did he meet Vanaras? What led to the abduction of Sita?” Hanuman replied: “I will tell you all about from the day you left Chitrakooda, with a heavy heart, to what happened today”. Hearing the whole story, Bharatha was pleased. Shatrughna, the ministers, and their servants also listened to Hanuman intently and sat there dumbfounded.

Entering Ayodhya

Bharatha told Shatrughna to decorate the city commemorating Rama’s return. “In every temple, let there be bright lamps lit all around and the singers shall chant the glory of Rama. Drummers, dancers, and ornamented elephants should fill the royal streets. There must be feasts all over the city and the ladies must come out in their finest attire. Let there be flags of bright color all over the city. Get the city buildings cleaned and filled with floral arrangements and incense burning in every corner. Invite Sages and Brahmanas in large numbers to gather when he comes. Let the citizens show up with their families to look at their real king.” People started crowding the city streets. There were ten thousand decorated elephants and chariots, hundred thousand horses and foot soldiers. Royal ladies came sitting on palanquins to get a glimpse of the king. Bharatha held Raman’s sandals on his head and started walking towards the gate of the city accompanied by Shatrughna. Suddenly the shining Vimana, Pushpaka, appeared in the sky. Hanuman said: “See the air chariot in which Rama is coming with Sita, Lakshmana and the kings of Kishkindha and Lanka along with a huge army. Drench your eyes with the nectar of vision of seeing the Lord.” Suddenly pandemonium broke and the noise of people yelling with exhilaration was heard out to the clouds.

When Bharatha saw Rama sitting in the Vimana, he folded his hands in respect as if he has seen the bright sun rising from behind the Eastern Mountains. Bharatha and Shatrughna climbed up the Vimana and they prostrated at the feet of Rama, Rama embraced them, and they wept the tears of joy. They paid respect to Lakshmana and Sita and then they noticed Sugriva and Vibhishana. All the Vanara Warriors had taken human forms for the time being, and Bharatha embraced them. Hanuman introduced to him Angada, Jambava, Nila, Mainda, Vivida, and several warriors from the Vanara army.

Bharatha embraced Sugriva and said: “It was only because of you Rama was able to kill Ravana. Emperor Dasaratha had only four sons, but now I declare that he had five sons, including you. You are our brother.”

Rama went to Mother Kousalya and prostrated at her feet. He also prostrated Kaikeyi and Sumitra. Lakshmana followed his brother. Sita paid her respects to the queens. Sugriva and the Vanara ladies also met with the mothers and paid their respects.  Bharatha brought the sandals to Rama and put them on his feet, again prostrating. “I am submitting back the kingdom you asked me to take care of in your absence. My life has become useful by serving you. My desires have been fulfilled. The treasury is full of wealth at least ten times as much as what I started with. There has been a ten-fold increase in the number of Elephants, horses, and chariots as well. With your grace, I have looked after the country so far. Now you cannot renounce the kingdom or us, your subjects. Reign the kingdom and protect us; there is no other go for us.

Coronation of Rama

Everyone praised Bharatha. They all got on the Vimana and went to Nandigram and reached Bharatha’s Ashram. Then Rama bid goodbye to Pushpaka: “Go back to your owner, Kubera. Come back whenever I need to ride on you!” The Vimana went up with no passengers.  Rama and brothers prostrated at the feet of Sage Vasishta. The sage welcomed them and gave them seats, At the behest of everyone gathered there, including the ministers and the Brahmanas, Rama agreed to take the helm of the kingdom.

“I will take charge of Ayodhya to make you all happy. Make arrangements for it.” Shatrughna called the royal barbers and asked them to serve the brothers and the guests. Vibhishana, Sugriva, Bharatha, Lakshmana, and Rama cleaned up their matted locks of hair and adorned the best dresses. They wore appropriate royal ornaments as well. Ladies of Ayodhya made up Sita Devi with fine saree and ornaments that she shone there like Goddess Lakshmi. Kousalya gave gold ornaments and sarees to Vanara ladies. Then Sumanthra got his chariot ready for Rama to travel. Vibhishana, Sugriva, Angada, Hanuman, and others got on other chariots driven by elephants in the retinue. Sita along with the Vanara ladies went behind with the singers and drummers at tow. Bharatha drove a chariot and Vibhishana held and fanned the royal insignia. Shathrughna held the glittering umbrella. There were ten thousand Vanaras in human form and they were sitting on elephants. Ladies of Ayodhya feasted their eyes seeing Rama, the most handsome man, accompanied by his brothers and confidants. They forgot about their household duties and got mesmerized looking at their king. Rama went to his father’s palace and met with his mothers and got their blessings. He told Bharatha: “Please arrange palaces to stay for the kings of Vanaras and Rakshasas.” Bharatha arranged it in no time and Sugriva and Lakshmana took a rest there.

Bharatha requested Sugriva to officiate the coronation ceremony, Abhisheka, for Rama. “Bring water from the four oceans and do the rituals of coronation as per the tradition.” Jambava, Hanuman, Angada, and Sushena, went to four seas and got the waters for the Abhisheka. They had four golden pots filled with water and covered them with sandalwood leaves. The ritual also asked for more water from other pious lakes and streams and the Vanaras were quick to bring those. They brought in all the other materials for the ceremony as well. Rama sat on the throne with Sita on the left. Sage Vasishta coronated Rama in the presence of other great sages such as Vamadeva, Jabali, Gautama, and Valmiki. There were one thousand and eight golden pots glittering in the sun and chanting of the Vedas resonated in the sky. Vanaras whiffed the venue with scented fans. Shatrughna held the royal umbrella above the throne and scores of Kshatriyas were on hand to serve all. Celestials started gathering in the sky to look at the ceremony. Indra sent a special necklace made of precious stones for Rama. Sri Rama shone like the sun, sitting on the throne as the king of Ayodhya and everyone extolled his glory. They chanted a hymn narrating his compassionate ways of blessing his devotees.

“Rama, Salutations to you. You are the Veda personified. You are the ultimate truth. You are omniscient and omnipotent.  You are indeed the ever-present truth.” Seeing the coronated Rama in his full attire, everyone was elated, and they knew that their lives were rendered meaningful.

Vanaras Blessed by Rama

When Rama started ruling the kingdom, the earth became much more fertile, and people rejoiced in their houses with no concerns. All fruits from trees became sweeter and all flowers smelled nicer. Rama donated several thousands of elephants, horses, and cows to Brahmans and others.  Local kings and chieftains got gold and royal silks. Rama gave Sugriva a golden necklace studded with gems that glittered brightly. Other Vanaras were also given gifts generously. Then Rama gave Sita, a special necklace with gems so precious that its value cannot be assessed. She put it on her neck first and smiled at Rama. Then she took it out with both her hands, looking at Rama, and then looked at Maruti and the necklace. Rama knew what she wanted to do and told her: “Oh! Beautiful one, look around and you may gift it to anyone you like.” Sita smiled and gifted it to Hanuman. Hanuman wore it with pride and stood with folded hands, and his face glittered along with the necklace.

Then Rama called Hanuman aside and told him: “Oh! Maruti, you may ask of me anything for a boon, without hesitation.” Maruti replied with a devotion-filled voice: “Lord, please let me live till the day your name and fame are sung by the people all over the world. My thirst in hearing your name and glories has not to been satiated yet and I do not want any other boon. May my mind be always devoted to you!” Hearing this noble request, Sri Rama was pleased and blessed him: “May you live long as desired, liberated, listening to my stories. My friend, devotion is the only path to realization! Sita Devi blessed him to get all physical comforts in life without any effort. He was overtaken by devotion and his eyes welled up. He prostrated at them again and again before leaving for the Himalayas for penance.

Rama called Guha and bid him goodbye blessing him to live happily with devotion. He gifted Guha with special ornaments and jewels. Rama embraced him and Guha went to his abode fully immersed in devotion to Rama. Other Vanaras were also given generous gifts and Sugriva returned with them to Kishkindha. Janaka, Sita’s father was present all the time during the festivities. Rama said goodbye to him after gifting him special clothes and ornaments. Other kings also took leave of Rama and finally Vibhishana bid him goodbye. He prostrated at Rama’s feet and Rama overcame with emotion and embraced him: “Your timely help was critical for me winning over the enemies. May you live long, reigning Lanka! Do not forget me. Do your daily poojas to Vishnu without disruption. Live as a liberated soul. Rama gave him gold and precious stones amply. They both wept as Vibhishana departed for Lanka.

Rama’s Kingdom

Rama and Sita lived enjoying the royal life, conducting Yagnas and the fame of Ayodhya spread far and wide. He conducted the most legendary Aswamedha Yagna as well. Their subjects were happy with no lack of anything in the country. There were no new war widows in the country, and the news of illnesses were few and far between.  The earth was very fertile, and all the plants and trees were lush green throughout the year with rains coming on time. There were no thieves and untimely deaths of children were never heard of. Everyone did pooja to Rama and they chanted his name as their daily Mantra. People were engaged in their duties as per the stipulated dharma for their varnas. All were compassionate to others, and none thought ill of others. No one looked at other people’s wives with wrong intentions. Everyone behaved with their senses under control. Rama looked after his subjects as a father would look after his children. People of Ayodhya lived a peaceful life as if they were living in Vaikundha, the abode of Lord Vishnu.

Aditya Hridhay Mantra

When the fierce fight was going on, Sage Agastya appeared, as if from nowhere. Rama got down from the chariot and paid respect to the great sage. Agastya told Rama in a pleasing tone: “I just came to wish you well and let you know that all your sorrows will end soon. All the three types of sorrows, the sadness due to separation, and all the dangers will stay away from you from now on. I will teach you a Mantra, a stuti, chanting which all your worldly afflictions will cease, you will live for long, and your fame will spread far and wide. Chant this stuti with devotion. All can propitiate the Sun God by chanting this stuti whether you are a Deva, Rakshasa, Celestial, Monk, Guhyaka, Yaksha, Kimpurusha, Apsaras, or Human to get benefitted. Sun is the primordial Deva, who maintains the fourteen worlds with his rays carrying divine energy. He is indeed the destroyer of these worlds when the time is ripe. For everyone from Devas to the Trinity, celestials to demigods, and humans to animals, Sun is keeping track of time like days, weeks, months, and the year. He is the eternal witness for all that is happening in the world and all that is done by all. Prostrate to Surya every day and take in his blessings.

“Salutations to the one who dispels darkness. Salutations to Surya who dispels delusions. Salutations to the calm yet resolute Lord who is the most attractive. Salutations to Surya who sustains all living and non-living entities. Salutations to the one and only divine witness. Salutations to Surya, the embodiment of truth.” Chant these and you can get rid of all fears.”

Hearing Agastya’s advice, Rama was pleased and got inspired to continue his duty with more enthusiasm. Rama with folded hands bid the sage goodbye. Agastya left in a sky chariot and joined Narada in the sky to watch the Leela of war Rama was fighting to upkeep dharma in the universe.

The Killing of Ravana

Rama asked Matali to drive the chariot straight to Ravana. Ravana stood there with stern resolve, ready to fight till the end. Arrows flew in all directions and the dust spread all over and reduced the visibility. Rama shattered Ravana’s flag post. He retorted with more arrows aimed at Matali and his horses. Ravana used maces, iron bars, and pillars on the enemy and Rama stuck to his expertise, the bow, and arrows. Their two chariots were running in all directions as if the charioteers were showing off their skills and the celestials were wonderstruck seeing the war between Rama and Ravana. They all agreed that it was a unique battle. Both were a match for the battle and the Devas started worrying. Surya was about to set and there was a tremor in the earth. Oceans were disturbed and the wind blew hard. The fight was akin to a duel between two oceans or two skies. Suddenly Rama cut one of Ravana’s heads and it fell on the ground. But a new head grew at that neck instantly. Rama repeated this one hundred and one times, and each time a new head came up. Ravana kept his ten heads intact. Rama knew that Ravana would have done ample penance for this to happen. The arrows that killed Kumbhakarna and other mighty Rakshasas were seemed reluctant to kill Ravana.

Both continued to show their strength and prowess, but no one was relenting. When scores of arrows hit Rama’s body, a decisive thought rose in Rama’s mind and suddenly for him, the arrows felt soft like flowers and Ravana started losing his grip. They fought continuously for seven days and finally, Matali told Rama to use the Paithaa-mahastra, given by sage Agastya. Rama took that divine arrow and shot at Ravana using his full might and it pierced his heart and went to the ocean and cleansed itself, before coming back to Rama’s quiver. Ravana fell from the chariot like a huge tree and the Devas showered flowers on Rama, from the sky. Nature rejoiced to witness the long-awaited event. Sun was brighter and the air wafted pleasantly. Rishis chanted “Jaya, Jaya, Rama” from their Ashrams.

Rakshasas who were still around Ravana ran back to the city and started crying aloud. Sugriva, Hanuman, Angada, Nila, and other Vanara warriors howled happily to mark the victory. Vibhishana, with a heavy heart, sat beside Ravana’s body and started wailing in a low tone: “All these are happening because of my fate. I had told him the consequences of his indiscretions and he kicked me out of Lanka. I cannot see you, the mighty king Ravana, lying on the bare ground. It must be my fate to witness this misfortune happening to my family. Who can divert the Lord’s will!”

Rama consoled Vibhishana and told him that Ravana was a great warrior. He died like a real fighter, and it is appropriate for powerful and gallant kings to leave their bodies in a battle. He fought against me, and he will go to heaven reserved for such heroes. Rama asked him to do the final rites for his brother, with all the royal rituals. As Rama was advising Vibhishana, Mandodari, Ravana’s widow came to see Ravana’s body. She cried falling on her husband’s body and wailed and other Rakshasa ladies joined her. Rama asked the Vanaras to make a funeral pyre. Vibhishana was relieved to hear Rama asking them to honor Ravana as a hero and to give him a royal cremation although his brother was a sinner of the worst kind.

“If anyone dies of my arrows, know that all his sins are dissolved. Know also that all rivalry lasts only until death. Do the necessary rituals so that your heroic brother will get the virtuous path leading to heaven. Add sandalwood and other scented wood to the fire. Let there be drumming to celebrate the life of a valorous king, who was also a Brahmana.” Vibhishana performed the rites as instructed and set fire to the pyre. Ravana’s body was engulfed in fire. Matali prostrated Rama and bid goodbye and reached Indra.

Rama asked Vibhishana to take charge as the king of Lanka. Hearing this, the Vanaras along with the Rakshasa citizens, prepared a quick ceremony to formalize it. He was already the coronated king of Rakshasas. Rishis blessed him: “May you reign Lanka as long as Rama’s story is sung in the world over!” Rakshasas came to see the new king with lots of gifts and Vibhishana submitted them at Rama’s feet and offered his salutations. Rama blessed him and to please him, told him: “Be happy. Consider I have accepted all your gifts”. Then Rama embraced Sugriva: “Yes, we have accomplished what we had in mind, because of your help. Without your help, I could not have killed Ravana.”

Rama Meets Sita After the War

Rama told Hanuman to inform Sita Devi, the news of the killing of Ravana. “Please listen and observe her facial gestures and let me know how she responds.” Maruti went to the city and the Rakshasa welcomed him with open arms. He went and prostrated at Sita’s feet. With a smiling face, Hanuman told her everything about the battle. “Lakshmana, Vibhishana and, us Vanaras fought under the command of Rama and killed many Rakshasas, and finally Rama killed Ravana in a fierce fight. The Lord has asked me to tell you the news.” Sita was overjoyed. With a cracked voice, she said: “Oh! Best among the Vanaras, tell me how I would go and see him. I do not have the patience or courage to wait any longer. You must make it happen without delay.” Hanuman went back to Rama and reported Sita’s desire. “I am devastated without seeing Sita Devi and please bring her to me as soon as possible. Let her take a bath and wear royal attire. Bring her on a palanquin.” Rama said. Hanuman went back along with Vibhishana, to Sita, and the older ladies helped her get ready with all the fine attire and ornaments.

As the palanquin moved from the city to where Rama was waiting, there was a commotion among the Vanaras crowding to have a glimpse of Sita Devi. The sentries shooed them away and they were sad. Hearing about this Rama, out of his compassion, ordered Vibhishana not to stop the Vanaras. “Did I ask you to stop the Vanaras from seeing Sita and mistreat them? What is wrong with them wanting to see Sita Devi? She is like a mother to them, and no one should stop children from meeting with their mother. Now all of you can go and see her!” So, saying Rama blessed them.

“Oh! Daughter of Mother Earth, come to me. Why is there a scandal on you?” Rama was thinking about how the Maya Sita was created to play her part in the drama. He pretended to be angry and expressed his concerns. Sensing the discomfort of Rama, Sita Devi declared: “To make my husband have full confidence in my chastity, I will jump in the fire right away. Lakshmana, make a fire, I don’t fear the test.”

Lakshmana, with Rama’s permission, made an altar with large flames of fire. Sita Devi, circumambulated the fire three times with folded hands and meditated on Agni and other Devas. Then she said: “Lord Agni, you are the witness of everything and if I had ever thought about anyone other than my husband, you would know it. It is time for you to tell the truth.” She jumped in the fire without a semblance of concern on her face. The whole universe stood still for a moment. Devas and celestials lined up the sky and the forefathers witnessed the Agni test.

Indra and Brahma extolled Lord Rama as he has accomplished the mission of his avatar. Everyone was happy to see that Ravana’s reign had been ended by Rama’s arrow. Lord Agni came from the flame along with Sita Devi and declared: “You had entrusted me, Sita, while you were in the forest and now, I am returning her to you. Do not entertain any doubts about her. Accept her as your queen.” Rama paid his respects to Agni and accepted Sita Devi. Rama and Sita sat there for a while giving Darshan to all.

Indra’s Stuti

Indra prostrated at the feet of Rama and started chanting a beautiful stuti. “Oh! Lord, Rama, Ramachandra, we seek refuge at your feet. Who else is there to protect us? Who else is there as compassionate as you! May I be able to think about you all the time and chant your name incessantly! May I be able to tell your stories and hear about your escapades. Lord Siva is chanting your name for self-cleansing, and he wears the water from washing your feet on his forehead. Salutations, Rama, Salutations!”

When Indra praised Rama, he asked Indra to ensure certain favors for the monkeys. “You must make the Vanara warriors died in the battle, wake from the dead, and they should not have a memory about it any longer. You also must make all the fruits sweet whenever the monkeys bite on them. Whenever they drink water off the rivers, they should feel they are drinking honey.” Indra agreed and made these possible immediately. Monkeys woke up as if they were sleeping for a long time. They came and prostrated Rama.

Lord Siva came to see Rama in a sky chariot and told him: “Look, your father Dasaratha has come from heaven to see you.” Rama hurried and met with his father. He prostrated at his father and Dasaratha embraced him tight and kissed his forehead. Sita and Lakshmana also paid their respect and the king embraced them. “Oh! Rama, you were born as my son, but today I realize that you are the immaculate Paramatma. With that knowledge, I got relieved from the cycle of birth and death. May I not be swayed by your Maya power anymore.” Rama bid his father goodbye and Dasaratha reached the heavenly abode. Lord Brahma returned to Sathya Loka. Lord Siva, along with Parvati, returned to Kailas. Devas, Rishis, Narada, and the other celestials also receded to their respective abodes.

The Killing of Maya Sita

Indrajit entered the battlefield well prepared, with his army. Seeing his arrival, Lakshmana told his brother “Look at him, if he continues to fight behind the curtain of magic, how do we resist? How long do we continue like this? Please uproot their clan using your Brahmastra.” Rama replied calmly: “We must not use weapons like Brahmastra on enemies who are running away or armless or hiding or seeking refuge at your feet. However, I will fight him.” So, saying, Rama took his bow and arrows and got ready. Seeing this, Indrajit created a Maya Sita and sat her in his chariot, and entered through the Western gate. Vanaras were sad seeing Sita’s fate and even Hanuman was upset. While they were looking, Indrajit used his sword on her, cutting her body into pieces. She wailed calling out Rama’s name and her blood started wetting the ground. Maruti wanted to recede from the battlefield as the main reason for the war got perished in the hands of the Rakshasa. “Let us go back after informing Lord Rama what happened.”

Hanuman and other Vanaras walked to Rama with a heavy heart and Rama told Jambava: “How come Hanuman is coming back from the war scene? It is quite unbecoming of Maruti to run away from a battle. Please go and check what is happening.” He went and asked Hanuman what happened and why they are returning. Then Hanuman said: “We are not receding due to fear of death in the war. I need to tell Lord Rama certain things that are too painful for me.” He reached Rama and informed him of the killing of Sita. Rama fainted and fell to the ground, and Lakshmana kept his head on his lap. Hanuman held his feet and embraced them. Lakshmana tried to console Rama with words of solace.

Hearing the commotion, Vibhishana reached there and asked what happened. Lakshmana told him what Hanuman and other Vanaras saw on the battlefield. Suddenly Vibhishana laughed aloud, clapping his hands. “Ayo! What do monkeys know! Who can kill the Goddess of the three worlds? You know, Meghanada is a magician. He did this trick to buy him some time and finish a Yagna at Nikumbhila, with no disturbance from the Vanaras. Now you guys go and prevent him from completing the sacrificial Yagna. If you do not stop him, nobody will be able to kill him if he completes the ritual. Rama, get up, without any worries. I will go with Lakshmana and Vanaras.” Rama permitted them and they went straight to Nikumbhila.

The Killing of Indrajit

Lakshmana and Sugriva walked with the Vanara army consisting of some of the greatest warriors of their army. Ravana’s son had already started his ritual with the help of several Rakshasas. Vanaras lifted heavy rocks and trees and charged at the Rakshasas. That was unexpected and Rakshasa started falling dead. Meghanada knew it will be impossible to proceed with the Yagna when these monkeys were there. He took his bow and arrows and starting shooting arrows at Vanaras. “He hasn’t completed the Yagna, and this is the time to hit him,” said, Vibhishana. Lakshmana started shooting arrows on Meghanada. Hanuman lifted Lakshmana on his shoulder and continued fighting.

Seeing Vibhishana by the side of Lakshmana, Indrajit chided his uncle. “You are my paternal uncle, born in the Rakshasa family, but you work for the enemy like a slave! what a pity! Even our clan is going to be extinct thanks to you!”

Then Vibhishana told him: “No, you and your father are the reason for destroying our clan. I am proud to say that because of Lord Rama’s blessing, I will be the one to protect our clan, whatever is left after the war, that is. As they were talking, Lakshmana shot some powerful arrows that destroyed Indrajith’s chariot along with its charioteer. Still, he boasted to Lakshmana: “A couple of days ago, you have seen my prowess in war and remember what happened! I think today I will give a feast to the wild animals with your severed body” His arrows made severe wounds on Lakshmana. Hanuman and Sugriva also jumped in and helped Lakshmana, but the Vanara army seemed weak in front of the Rakshasa. The battle between Lakshmana and Indrajit was fierce, and both were drenched in blood. Ravana’s son went to Lanka and got another chariot in no time that no one noticed his magical vanishing and reappearance within moments. Celestials expressed their amazement as it was a war like no other. The battle lasted three days and still, there was no end to the incessant beatings and retorts by both the warriors. Finally, Lakshmana used the ultimate arrow from his quiver, Indra Astra, to strike at his neck and it did its job well. After killing Indrajit, the arrow went to the sea, washed off the blood, and came back to Lakshmana’s quiver. Devas were happy and the celestials celebrated the victory with drums and music. Lakshmana went to Rama and paid his respects and informed him of the victory. “What you have done is not an easy task. Once Indrajit is dead, that means Ravana has lost his right hand, and it is as good as his death. He will come soon to avenge his son’s death for sure.”

Ravana’s Wailing

Ravana heard the news of his son’s death, and he could not believe it. He fell unconscious for a while and then started wailing uncontrollably. “Ha, Ha, my son, Mandodari’s son, Oh! great warrior, Oh! Handsome prince! It is all my karma to face such a disaster in the family. While I have a sleepless night in the sorrow of your passing, all the Devas and humans are going to sleep well tonight because their nightmare is gone! They do not have to fear anyone. The cause of your death is, Sita and I better kill her and drink her blood.” So, saying, he took his sword and started walking towards the garden where Sita was sitting restlessly. Sita saw the enraged Rakshasa and was petrified. She started chanting Rama’s name seeking his protection. Then Suparswa, an intelligent advisor of Ravana stopped him and told him to avoid amassing more sins in his life. “You were born into a Brahmana family, and you are well known as a noble person. Who can list your glories and exploits? You are the foremost among the devotees of Siva, the most prominent among the Trinity. Your brother Kubera is the custodian of all the wealth of the universe. All three worlds respect you and, your knowledge of Sama Veda is legendary. You have won over the five senses, and no one can compare you in performing penance and austerities. It is not even thinkable that such a person would kill a hapless woman. Even that thought will bring disgrace to your name. You go and fight your enemies, Kill those humans and Vanaras without any difficulty.” Ravana was convinced that it was not appropriate for a person of his stature to kill a woman. He talked to the ministers and warriors before getting ready to enter the battlefield. Rakshasa went to fight, and Rama retorted with his mighty arrows. Then Rama hit Ravana with several of his arrows and his body had wounds all over. He was tired and felt defeated and returned to his palace.

Disruption of Ravana’s Yagna

Ravana met with his guru, Sage Shukra, and explained the situation. “They killed most of our warriors and my son, Indrajit. Tell me how should I proceed? Please show your disciple a way to deal with the situation.” Shukra advised: “Ravana, you must please the Gods and get their blessings to win over your enemies. You must conduct a fire sacrifice in a secret cave, and you must do it quickly. Once you start the ritual, you must finish it properly to get the benefit. If the sacrifice is successful, invincible warriors will be coming out of the sacrificial fire with powerful weapons and help you in the battle. With their help, no one can defeat you.”

So, saying, the guru taught him the Mantra to chant during the ritual. Ravana learned it quickly and reached an underground cave. It was quickly decorated and got ready for the Fire sacrifice. He closed all the gates to the city so that no one could enter to disrupt him. He started the ritual with proper care and concentration. The fire ritual generated smoke in the cave, and it started leaking out to the sky. Vibhishana noticed it and told Rama to observe it. “Oh! King, Ravana has started the secret fire sacrifice and if we let him complete it successfully, then no one will be able to win him over. Please send our Vanaras to disrupt the ritual. Hanuman, Angada, and one hundred crore monkeys stormed the city at once and started destroying everything. Sarama, Vibhishana’s wife showed the location of the sacrifice and Vanaras went inside the cave after breaking the locks of the heavy doors. Ravana was sitting in deep meditation with his eyes closed and the monkeys kicked and beat him. They soiled the altar of the Yagna and killed the attendants. Mahabala, a Vanara giant kicked and scratched Ravana’s body. But Ravana was still meditating, without getting distracted by all these commotions. Then the Vanaras decided to frighten his wife Mandodari by pulling off her dress and she started moaning loudly.

“When my great husband is still alive, I am getting beaten and insulted by monkeys! What kind of fate is this? Have you lost all your pride, my dear? Are you not ashamed when your wife is being assaulted? Are you aware that they are pulling my hair and dragging me on the bare floor? Are you a fool to continue your meditation when your wife is fighting for her life? How come I ended up facing this in my life? A wife is a man’s pride and joy. An enemy is bound to take her by force and a good husband must try his best to rescue her. Is it not better for you to die than to witness your wife’s distress?”

Ravana heard his wife’s cry and opened his eyes. He got up holding his sword and approached Angada to fight. Vanaras left Mandodari and came out of the cave knowing that Ravana could not complete the ritual. They did not let Ravana complete the ritual of pouring ghee in the fire as the spatula was taken from him by force. They reported it to Rama, and they were relieved that there is not enough time for Ravana to do the Yagna again.

Ravana and Mandodari

Ravana tried to console Mandodari: “Oh! Dear, everything happens as per God’s will. Once you are born, you are bound to experience all that is destined for you. For me, this time is terrible. Knowing this reality please do not fall prey to grief. Ignorance is indeed sorrow, and it leads to ego. We erroneously identify with the body and that is the cause for sorrow. Our relationships with spouses and children are associated with the body. Sorrow, Delusion, Fear, Anger, Greed, Desire, Hatred, Attachment, Elation, Old age, and Death, etc. are born out of ignorance. But the reality is knowledge itself, and it is unsullied by any modifications. It is complete and it does not have any attachment or detachment with anyone or anything. See this truth in yourself and throw away your anguish. I will go and kill those Vanaras and the humans. If that does not happen, I will be liberated by Rama’s arrows. That will be a blessing for me; but if that happens, you must kill Sita, and jump into my funeral pyre. Thus, you will also attain moksha.”

Hearing her husband’s words, Mandodari said: “No one in the three worlds can win over Rama. I know, Rama is indeed the Lord Mahavishnu in human form. He has taken divine avatars earlier as well. He took avatar as a fish to rescue Manu and the Vedas. Then he became a tortoise during the churning of the milky ocean. Then as a boar, he lifted the planet earth. He was a man-lion when he killed Hiranyaksha. He became a dwarf, Vamana, and measured the three worlds in two steps and the third step destroyed Mahabali’s ego. As Parasurama, he killed the Kshatriya-Rakshasas several times before this avatar of Rama. I know, he has taken birth as Dasaratha’s son to annihilate you. You have abducted his wife and that became the cause for your fall and our son’s death. You must be ashamed of yourself. Return Sita to Rama and give the kingdom to Vibhishana. Rama is compassionate and he will let us go to pursue penance in the forest.”

Ravana replied with a stern voice: “There is no use in me living after having caused the deaths of my brothers, sons, and confidants. Do not worry; nothing will happen to me. I will return victorious, and eventually, we will also enjoy Vaikundha, the abode of Vishnu.

Rama-Ravana Battle

Ravana sped in his chariot, ready to fight. A big army of Rakshasas under ten commanders went with him. Hanuman and the Vanaras saw this huge army and were concerned about it. Rama told them “Go and get them, do not hesitate.” Rama jumped into the battlefield and showered arrows at the Rakshasas as if there was one Rama, each fighting against every Rakshasa, individually.  The whole day passed by in the fierce battle and almost everyone on both sides got injured. Even the mountains, seas, and trees were covered with arrows coming from all directions. There were headless Kabandhas seen everywhere and dead bodies of elephants, horses, Rakshasa, and Vanaras were strewn all over the field. Vultures and other meat-eating animals started gathering in great numbers, seeing the feast waiting for them. The sweet sounds of the bells attached to Rama’s bow were heard more often and the Devas showered flowers from the sky. Celestials started dancing seeing Rama’s victory in the battle. Eventually, most of the Rakshasas fell. Rama appeared bright and shining on the battlefield just as the sun appearing in the clouds. Rama told Sugriva and Hanuman: “There is no one else to fight like this except for Lord Siva and Vishnu.”

Rakshasa ladies started crying knowing that their husbands, brothers, fathers, and sons were all dead. “Who will be there to look after us! That wretched lady Surppanakha is the root cause of all these tragedies. She had an eye for Rama and that was detrimental for our clan. Ravana is viler than her. He wanted Sita and that desire is the cause of all the destruction that happened in Lanka.  Khara and Thrisiras were killed easily by Rama along with their army. Later he killed Bali and Sugriva became the king of Vanaras. He sent out Vanaras in search of Sita and Maruti created havoc in Lanka, coming as a messenger. To fight Ravana, they made a dyke in the ocean and came to Lanka in great numbers. Vibhishana advised him, but the dull-witted Ravana would not listen. He sent his sons, brothers, and all the great warriors to fight with Rama’s army and they were killed. You did all kinds of atrocities against Brahmanas, Devas, and your subjects, to amass wealth. You did not leave even your gurus from your brutalities. This rascal has made our life miserable.”

Hearing the ladies, Ravana could not wait any longer. He jumped in to fight more vigorously. Viroopaksha, Mahodara, and Mahaparswa accompanied him and accessed the arena through the Northern gate. An intense fight ensued between the two armies. Sugriva killed Virupaksha and Mahodara. Angada dealt with Mahaparswa. Rama used several divine arrows on the Rakshasas. Ravana used an arrow given to him by Maya and Rama resisted it with a Gandharva Astra. Then Ravana used a Surya Astra and Rama cut it down. Ravana shot ten arrows and Rama retorted with one hundred arrows at the same time. Ravana was wounded but continued his fight. Lakshmana’s seven arrows destroyed the chariot. Vibhishana killed the horses of his chariot, beating with a mace. Then Ravana used a special spear gifted to him by Maya, at Vibhishana.  Lakshmana prevented it from hitting Vibhishana. That made Ravana furious, and he used his ultimate weapon, Sakthi on Lakshmana. That was a brutal blow and Lakshmana fell unconscious having struck with the sharp spear, Shakthi. Vanaras could not pull out the spear and Rama had to come.

“Keep watch over Lakshmana. This is not the time to grieve. I will kill all of them and you are going to witness an exciting battle. Rama and Raghava cannot exist at the same time on earth anymore. I will kill Ravana in such a way that my fame will never vanish if the seven seas, seven islands, seven mountains, Sun and the Moon, the sky, and the earth remain. Devas, Rakshasas, Nagas, Celestials, and the Rishis, must watch it.” Thus, saying Rama commenced the fight directly with Ravana. His bow strings vibrated as he held the arrows tight against it and the whole world noticed the sound. But he was distressed knowing Lakshmana’s condition. He told Sugriva: “I am getting tired, and my strength has been depleted seeing Lakshmana’s injury. My grip on the bow is not strong enough to kill the Rakshasa.”

Sushena came forward and told him that Lakshmana’s body can still be rescued. The body has not started turning into blue color and if only we can get the medicine, Vishalya Karani, we can wake him up. Immediately, Maruti flew to the Himalayas and brought the medicine in no time and Lakshmana got up. He embraced Rama and Lakshmana reminded Rama that whatever happens, he cannot go back from the promise he had given to the Devas and Rishis. “Please go ahead and kill him and rescue the world as soon as possible.”

Rama once again went to fight with Ravana resolutely.  A heavy fight ensued, and both were attacking each other the best way possible. Seeing Rama may be a bit relaxed, Indra told the charioteer, Matali to take his chariot to assist Rama. “You must drive the chariot knowing Rama’s wish.” Matali went to Rama and offered his help. “Please use my chariot, sent by Indra for your use. I will drive it so fast that Ravana will not have a chance. Ravana was surprised to see Rama in a new chariot as tall as his. Arrows started to rain from both sides. Several divine arrows were exchanged, such as Gandharvam, Rakshasam, Nagam, and Garudam, etc. Ravana’s arrow hit Matali and his horses. Rama was tired when Ravana used a spear at Rama. Immediately Rama took the powerful spear, Sakthi from Indra’s chariot and hurled it at Ravana. But that was cut into a hundred pieces by Ravana. Then Ravana shot several Nagastras which were met with Rama’s Arrows. Then Ravana’s charioteer turned the chariot around and sped away to avoid the onslaught of arrows.

“Why did you run away like a coward? It is insulting to me. Are you working for Rama?” Ravana asked him in an angry voice. He replied: “Oh! Lord, it is not because I love Rama and hate my master that I moved the chariot away; I saw you getting tired fighting Rama and as I am a faithful servant to you, I thought it would be better for you to take a short rest. You can return with increased vigor and that was my intent. A good charioteer should not wait for a command always. He must look after his master’s and horse’s food and drink needs. He must also know when the enemy is getting powerful and weak. A good charioteer will do what is appropriate in each situation without being told what to do.”

Ravana was relieved and embraced him gifting him a gold bangle. “Ok, I am pleased with your work, let us go back now. From now onward, there is no retreat for us without winning the battle. We will know in a day or two which way it is going to go. The chariot sped back to the arena and Rama was standing there waiting for them to get back. Both fought with their full might.

Yudhakandham Cond.

Sage Narada’s Stuti

Siddha, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, Guhyakas, Yakshas, Nagas, Birds, Apsaras, Kinnaras, Charanas, Kimpurushas, Pannagas, Tapasas, and the Devas showered flowers from the sky and celebrated Rama’s victory. Sage Narada appeared in the sky with his lute and started extolling Rama’s virtue. “Rama, the one who makes people rejoice is dark and handsome, seen always carrying his bow and arrows to protect dharma. His face is like the full moon and his compassion knows no bounds like the ocean. Oh! Rama, Lord of Sita, the king among kings, Narayana! prostrations unto thy feet. You are indeed the witness consciousness and the Paramatma. You are the primordial reality that existed even before the beginning of time. Now you are acting out a play in the guise of a human being, afflicted by the sorrows and pleasures. You are the reality under which the processes of creation, sustenance, and destruction occur, but you are unaffected by any of these. You are the truth, you are Siva, you are Vishnu. Because of Maya, you appear and disappear sometimes with clarity, and sometimes blurred to common people. Within the time you take to open and close your eyelids, worlds are created and destroyed. You have taken a variety of avatars to establish dharma. My salutations to you! Knowledge of the self is the only way to get liberated and that is possible only with your blessings. I am excited to see you and able to prostrate at your feet. May your grace be upon me all the time! My mind is always pulled in six different directions, and I am unable to concentrate on the path of self-inquiry. Be kind and lead me on the path of virtue, courage, and wisdom. May I be allowed to sing your glory and wander around the world, telling your stories to keen people! May I be part of Satsang all the time! Oh! Hero of the Sun Dynasty! You have just killed Kumbhakarna and that is a big relief for the earth. Now it is time to take care of the ten-headed Rakshasa, Ravana. Lakshmana is destined to kill Meghanada tomorrow. May you ever be victorious! Please accept my salutations again!” So, saying, Narada disappeared.

The Killing of Atikaya

Hearing the news of Kumbhakarna’s death at the battlefield, Ravana fainted, and then he started wailing about his loss. Thrisiras and Atikaya came to see Ravana and offered themselves to lead the war. Devantaka, Narantaka, Mahodara, Mahaparswa, Matta, and Unmatta joined them. As these eight mighty warriors showed up ready for his command, Ravana was relieved somewhat. He bid them good luck in the battle. When these combat soldiers descended, the Vanara army in large numbers came out to fight them. They took huge rocks and trees to fight, but the Rakshasas were powerful. Many Vanaras were killed. Several elephants, horses, and chariots were destroyed, and blood was seen everywhere. Headless bodies started dancing on the battlefield. When the Rakshasa charged towards him, wielding a sharp spear, Angada stopped him with his fist and killed him in one blow. He killed the other warriors such as Devantaka, Mahodara, and Thrisiras. Hanuman and Nila helped him in the fight. Mahaparswan, Matta, and Unmatta were killed by the Vanaras easily. Then Atikaya came in a chariot driven by thousand horses and started showering arrows and the Vanaras started running away with their tails lifted. Then Lakshmana resisted him with appropriate arrows. But to his surprise, all those arrows fell with their tips damaged, after hitting the Rakshasa. Lord Vayu went to Lakshmana in the guise of a man and told him about the boon Atikaya had obtained from Lord Brahma. He was wearing a top Brahma gave him and if it was covering his body, he cannot be killed by an ordinary weapon. “Kill him using the Brahmastra. You can then kill Indrajit, and Rama will put an end to Ravana.” So, saying, Vayu disappeared. Then meditating upon Rama, Lakshmana used the Brahmastra on the Rakshasa, and he was killed at once. Vanaras took his head as a trophy of victory and jumped around, bringing it to Rama. Hearing the news of defeat from the Rakshasas, Ravana was devastated and thundered cry with a sigh, saying that it must be his fate!

The Victory of Indrajit

“Oh! Sankara, my god! My sons and brothers are all dead along with the courageous warriors and ministers.” As Ravana was sobbing, his son, Indrajit came to see him. He prostrated in front of his father and told him not to worry if he was with him to help accomplish anything he wants. “I will kill your enemies so that you can live without any worries. Bless me to win the battle. You may please wait here to hear the good news.”

Ravana embraced and blessed him. Indrajit went to the battlefield along with his army. Before the fight, he sought advice from his guru and reached Nikumbhila, to conduct a special Yagna to please Lord Mahadeva. He followed the advice from his guru and arranged materials to conduct the ritual and commenced the pooja. He lit the sacrificial fire and chanted the Vedic Mantras with the prescribed intonation to enhance his power. Such rituals are known to give results right away and Indrajit received the ability to vanish and appear rapidly, along with his weapons and chariot, at wish. After the Yagna, he went to the battlefield and started showering arrows at the Vanaras. They tried to resist them using rocks and trees. Suddenly he vanished from the scene and started showering Brahmastras out of nowhere!

Vanaras could not see where the arrows were coming from, and they fell in the thousands and hundreds of arrows struck each of those gigantic warriors simultaneously. Maindan, Vividan, Gajan, Nalan, Gandhamadan, Panasan, Vinatan, Sushenan, Kesari, Satabali, Dhumran, Pramathi, Vegadarshi, Dadhimukhan, Gavakshan, Sarabhan, Durmukhan, Taran, Jyotirmukhan, Agnivadan, and even Angada and Sugriva got struck by his arrows. Sixty-seven crore Vanaras fell on the battlefield and Devas got worried. They discussed among themselves what they were observing on the ground. Suddenly Indrajit was able to aim and shoot Rama and Lakshmana successfully. They both fainted and fell to the ground.  Indrajit went to his palace and played the conch to declare success in battle that day.

Vibhishana was not injured as he had stepped away, thinking that, should an emergency occur on the battlefield, there must be someone to help the situation. In the night, Hanuman walked around using a fire-twig to see if there were anyone alive in the thousands of bodies strewn there. As he walked, he spotted Vibhishana, and they started the search together. They saw Jambava lying there injured and he was trying hard to open his eyes. Vibhishana asked: “Oh! Great one, can you recognize us? I know you cannot see us due to blood welling in your eyes. I am Vibhishana.” Immediately Jambava asked: “Oh! Vibhishana, have you seen Hanuman? Is he among the alive?”

Vibhishana was curious. “Oh! Mahatma, how come you asked only about Hanuman? How come you have that much concern about him and not about Rama, Lakshmana, Sugriva, or Angada? Jambava replied: “If Maruti is alive, there is nothing to worry but if he is dead, it is like everyone is dead.” Hanuman was happy to hear Jambava’s words and prostrated before him: “Here I am, alive and well.”

Jambava embraced him and kissed him on his head. “You are the only one who can give life to Rama, Lakshmana, and all others who have been struck by Meghanada’s arrows. You must reach the Rishabha Mountain which is situated beyond the Himalayas in the North. Four divine medicinal plants are there by the name Vishal Karani, Sandhana Karani, Suvarna Karani and, Mritasanjeevani.  These are standing there, as bright as the sun, between two tall summits of the mountain. They are indeed the Vedas being expressed in that form in nature. You must cross the ocean and pass several mountains, cities, and villages to reach the mountain. Go there and bring back the medicines. May you be victorious as always!” He blessed Hanuman. Hanuman jumped up the Mahendra Mountain to start his journey. He grew in gigantic proportions, and roared once; and as he jumped, the whole mountain trembled. As he was passing several great cities and countries, he saw Alakapuri, the city of Devas, Meru Mountain, and finally, the Rishabha Mountain.

Kalanemi and Ravana

Ravana came to know that Maruti has already started in search of a special medicine and got worried. He went to Kalan mi’s house in the middle of the night without anyone noticing him. Kalanemi was surprised at the king’s visit at the midnight and asked him why. Ravana told him the situation. “You know what is happening in Lanka these days. In the battle, Lakshmana fell getting struck by my Sakthi arrow. Then my son killed the men and Vanaras, using Brahmastra. But I heard that Maruti has gone to get a divine medicine to make them alive again. You must go and disrupt his mission. I will tell you the way to do it easily. You go there in the guise of a Rishi and tell him great words of wisdom and delay him there. He will fall for a Satsang and do not allow him to leave with the medicine.”

Hearing these dreadful words coming from such a learned person, Kalanemi tried to reason with Ravana.” Oh! king! You are an authority on Vedas, and you know everything. But take heed to my words. You know that I would not hesitate to die for you. I would die just as Maricha, and I will not falter. Tell me, what is the use if we live after all our family members are gone to Yama’s world? What is the use of getting a great kingdom then? Will we ever have a peaceful life? What would you do with Sita Devi? After all, the body is just the matter, a concoction of the five elements.  What is the use for keeping the body alive? You better return Sita to Rama and give the kingdom to Vibhishana. Then you should take up Vanaprastha.

Take your bath, daily, early in the morning and keep your body and mind clean. In the evening, do your daily oblations and watch the sunset before going to bed. Leave all the worldly attachments and control your senses. See that your Atman is not separate from the Paramatma. Know that the essence of all the living and non-living entities is the same reality, untainted by the vacillations of matter. Everything is under the spell of Maya and our identification with the body is the reason for our sorrow. Maya has the power to take you for a ride and that is the reason why we all behave differently. But with the Satsang, if we happen to find a guru and if he was able to show us the reality, we will be freed from the spell of Maya. The guru would advise you in the path of knowledge through meditation to reach the goal. But if we are not ready to meditate, then we can resort to a state of constant devotion to the Lord. The picture of Lord Rama, with Sita and Lakshmana, is an image worth keeping in mind all the time. If you meditate upon this image incessantly, you will be freed. You will get rid of all the afflictions you have been carrying through several past lives. Extol the virtues of Rama all the time. Be immersed in devotion to him!”

Hearing these words from Kalanemi, Ravana was furious beyond a limit. He took out his sword and charged towards him ready to slit his throat. “I better kill you right away.” Kalanemi noticed the resolve in Ravana’s eyes and acquiesced. “Ok, I will do as you asked, and I know that I am doing this for my good as I will have my death at the hands of a noble soul. I am starting forthwith to do as you ordered.”

The Killing of Kalanemi.

Immediately Kalanemi left Ravana and reached an Ashram created magically in the Himalaya, and he wore the garb of a Rishi. When Hanuman was passing by, he saw an active Ashram with several Rishis doing penance.  The area was very beautiful with plants and trees full of fruits. He thought for a moment “I haven’t come across this place before! Could it be that my mind is playing a trick? Did I lose my way to Rishabha Mountain? In any case, let me see the chief of this Ashram and will have something to drink and eat. I can see from here the two mountains where the medicinal plants grow”

Hanuman noticed that the Ashram was large and opulent. Kalanemi was the chief, and they were just completing a Yagna to please Lord Siva. Maruti prostrated the Rishi and told him: “My name is Hanuman, and I am a servant of Sri Rama. I am going to Rishabha Mountain to get some medicinal plants for my master. I just came in to get a drink of water.” Kalanemi was pleased and offered him to drink water from his water jug. “Drink as much as you want and eat some fruits. You must take a quick nap as well. Do not worry a thing as I can see the past present and the future with my divine vision. Vanaras and Lakshmana have woken up from their stupor and they are ready to fight again.”

“You are such a compassionate one”, said Hanuman. “I am too thirsty and a jug full of water is not enough for me and please show me a stream or a lake.” He sent a young monk with Hanuman to show him the lake. “Please wash your face and drink water and then come back fast. I will teach you a Mantra to access the medicine easily.” Kalanemi said.

Hanuman trusted him and he entered the lake closing his eyes. The young monk had already left. As he was about to drink water from the lake, a crocodile rose from the water. Hanuman looked at the beast and saw its mouth wide open, ready to gulp him. Hanuman used his bare hands to pull its jaws apart and killed it instantly. A divine light went up from its body and vanished into the sky and out came a celestial lady. “You freed me from the cursed life I have been living so long. I was an Apsara lady and got cursed by a sage and became a Rakshasi. My name is Dhanyamali. I will tell you something important. The Rishi in the Ashram is not a genuine yogi. He is Kalanemi, a demon living there in disguise to distract you from completing your mission. Ravana sent him here to trick you. Go kill the wretched fellow and access the medicine fast. You are the best among the Vanaras; may you ever be victorious!”

So, saying, she left Hanuman at the lakeshore. Hanuman went back to the Ashram and Kalanemi asked him why he took that long to return. “Come, I will teach you the Mantra as promised. You can give me an appropriate Dakshina, and I will bless you.” Maruti did not wait for long. He tightened his fist and hit the Rakshasa once and that was enough to kill Kalanemi.

Hanuman Returns with the Medicine.

Hanuman paid tribute to the mountains with folded hands, and he looked around for the medicine. He could not locate the Rishabha summit. In a rage, he plucked the whole mountain range and held it tight in his hand, and flew back to Lanka. He kept it at Rama’s feet, and everyone rejoiced once they got a waft of the medicine caressing them. Rama asked Maruti to return the mountain to its original spot and he flew back in no time. Hanuman returned immediately. Rakshasas had put their dead in the sea and so their bodies did not get in touch with the medicinal air, and they did not survive.

The Killing of Kumbha and Nikumbha

Vanaras were ready to play dirty after having been beaten by Indrajit. Angada and Sugriva ordered: “Go and destroy their houses, trees, gardens, and walls. Spoil their lakes and other facilities. Bring down their towers. Set fire to their building and that way we can catch them while they run for their life.” The warriors were waiting for such an order, and they created mayhem in the city. Elephants, horses, and other animals were killed in the fire that broke all over Lanka. Maruti had set fire to Lanka when he came as a messenger, but this time the army of monkeys had a field day. Rakshasa ladies cried out in pain, and they ran out of their houses. Rama and Lakshmana used their arrows somewhat indiscriminately and Ravana was worried sick. He asked Kumbha, son of Kumbhakarna to fight the Vanaras. Nikumbha, his younger brother did not want to stay back, and he too entered the battle. Kampana, Prajanghana, Yupaksha, and Shonitaksha, joined them, only to be killed by the mighty Vanaras such as Angada and Sugriva. The battle was severe with a lot of arrows flying in all directions injuring both sides. Several duels were happening at the same time. When Kumbha started shooting arrows like rain, Vanaras ran in all directions. Sugriva killed Kumbha and Nikumbha came forward to avenge his brother’s death. It was Hanuman’s turn to kill him. Rakshasas were weakened and they reported to Ravana what happened on the battlefield.

Ravana asked Makaraksha to fight and conquer the Vanaras. He was also a ferocious fighter and a great archer. He shot several Magistrals and the Vanaras were afraid. They came to Rama fearing the scores of snakes coming out of those arrows shot by Makaraksha. Rama took his bow and pulled it hard to shoot the Rakshasa with all his might. The Rakshasa was shot, but he would not run away defeated that easily. Rama destroyed his chariot and horses along with the charioteer.

Then the Rakshasa charged at Rama with his spear and Rama used the Agneyastra to split his head off. Hearing the news about the death of his best warrior, Ravana was outraged with fear, anguish, and anger. He jumped out of his throne ready to fight. Meghanada came to his father and said: “Please relax for now in the palace; do not get upset because of this setback. I will kill the enemies and put an end to your sorrow.”

Ravana Enters the Battlefield

“I am going to fight directly, there is no point in sending anyone anymore. Those who want can join me in the fight. Bring me the chariot!” Ravana said and jumped onto his golden chariot with a royal umbrella. The chariot was driven by thousand horses, and it was decorated with the best items gathered from around the world. He sat down wearing ten golden crowns and ornaments in the chariot that sped as fast as the air.  In his twenty hands, he wielded different weapons and his movement was like that of a mountain, blue in color, on wheels. Most of the warriors available in Lanka followed him. Rama saw his sons, relatives and ministers, and combat soldiers crowding at the entrance of the Northern gate of the city. He smiled at Vibhishana and signaled him to tell him about the warriors accompanying Ravana. “They all seem to be great warriors. Tell me who they are and what they are capable of.”

“See that is Kampana, a bright fellow, sitting on the elephant carrying a bow and arrow. The guy who is on the chariot with the insignia of a Lion is Ravana’s son Indrajit. He is a great fighter, and he has previously won over us in the battle. Next is Atikayan, another son of Ravana, wearing bow and arrows, coming on a magnificent chariot. Then there is Mahodaran coming on an elephant, wearing gold and wielding weapons. Vishalan is coming on a horse, carrying a large pestle. Thrisiras is coming on a white bullock carrying a trident, laughing wildly. Then there is Devantaka, another son of Ravana.  Kumbha and Nikumbha are sons of Kumbhakarna, and they are wielding heavy pestles. You can see that Ravana is well prepared with all his best men in the war.”

“I will kill the ten-headed Rakshasa and quench my anger.” Said Rama. Ravana told his men that he alone is enough to fight for now. Ravana came with full force and started killing Vanaras with his arrows and they sought refuge at Rama’s feet. Then Rama took his bow and arrows to fight the Rakshasa. Lakshmana took Rama’s permission and blessings before the most important fight he was going to engage in. “Even Indra will be exhausted if he fights with Ravana,” warned Rama. “They are magicians and they do not follow dharmic ways of warfare. He has Chandrahasa with him, obtained as a blessing of Chandrachooda, the mighty Maheswara. We must think about all aspects before entering into a war with a powerful opponent.”

When Hanuman saw Ravana sitting on his chariot, he jumped onto it and the Rakshasa got frightened. He raised his right hand and cursed Ravana: “your death will be due to Vanaras because you killed so many sages and noble people. Move away from my path if you dare not face my beating with my bare hand. Remember, I killed your son Akshakumara.” So, saying, Hanuman beat him once and Ravana fell. He got up and told Hanuman: “You are the first one to show up in Lanka and we let you go without killing. Do not take it as our weakness. Let us fight.”

Ravana beat Hanuman once and that made him fall unconscious. Nila leaped up and reached on top of Ravana and started jumping on each of his ten crowns as if he was dancing. Sage Narada started singing too. Ravana was quick to kill Nila, the son of Agni, using a Fire Arrow. Seeing this, Lakshmana attacked Ravana. They both kept shooting arrows at each other, and the sky got crowded with arrows. No one could see anything. Then Lakshmana cut off Ravana’s bow, and he was upset. He took the spear given by Maya and hurled it at Lakshmana. Lakshmana could not stop it with his arrows, and he fell unconscious.  Ravana tried to lift him from the ground, but he could not. Ravana, in the past, had lifted the Kailas Mountain, but he could move Lakshmana at all.

Maruti hit Ravana and he fell throwing up blood. Then Hanuman lifted Lakshmana easily and brought him to Rama. The magical spear that hit Lakshmana came back to Ravana and Rama fought Ravana. “Get on my shoulder and kill the demon easily.” Offered Hanuman. Rama accepted his offer and climbed onto hanuman’s shoulder. “Oh! Ravana! I was waiting to see you close by. Today I got that opportunity. I will kill you and all your warriors to protect the three worlds.” Rama shot an arrow at Ravana and Ravana returned an arrow in retort. A fierce fight ensued, and the oceans started shaking wildly.  Ravana shot at Hanuman and that made him fall unconscious. Rama took an arrow and shot it towards Ravana’s chest. Ravana fainted on the deck of his chariot. His bow fell from his hands, losing his grip on it. Seeing that Ravana was weak, Rama destroyed the chariot along with the charioteer, and flag posts, umbrellas, and the golden crowns.  Ravana stood there in anguish. Raman told Ravana: “Looks like you are too tired and upset to fight now. Go home tonight. Go back to your palace, get ready and come tomorrow morning to fight again.” Hearing this Ravana walked fast to his chamber, still afraid. He looked back to check if Rama’s arrow was following him. He reached his palace and spent the night in deep thoughts. Rama used a special concoction of medicines to treat Lakshmana, Sugriva, and Nila, and they were quickly cured of their injuries.

Kumbhakarna’s Words of Dharma

Ravana summarized what is happening in the war to his confidants: “Our power and fame are being depleted day by day. Our warriors are dying in large numbers and our good fortunes seem to subside rapidly. Curses showered on me by Vedha, Nanda Kesha, Vedavati, Rambha, Nalakoobara, Jambhari, Nilimpa, sages such as Kumbha, Siva’s consort Parvati, and other chaste ladies seem to be working out on me now. Their words will never be futile as they were all truthful people of high morals. Is there any way for us to win this battle? Maybe we should ask Kumbhakarna to jump in and fight. His power is unmatched, and he can inflict huge losses on the enemy. Go and wake him up. His schedule of sleeping six months and awake six months a year will be upset if we wake him up now, as he went to sleep only nine days back. We do not have a choice as he is our only hope. Use whatever methods necessary to wake him up. Make noises playing big drums and pipes at his ears. Several thousand warriors should roar together, and several pots of water must be poured into his ears. Get elephants to pull his nose hairs.” Ravana’s men did all these, but Kumbhakarna would not wake up, but after a while, he started moving his body and the Rakshasas ran away petrified. They brought a thousand pots full of alcohol and a thousand pots full of fresh blood along with a mountain of food for his breakfast. He got up and helped himself of these and ate a few live animals for the taste of fresh meat. He was pleased with the treatment and some of the messengers talked to him about Ravana’s need of the hour and he was the last hope for the king to win the battle.

“Ok, I will go and destroy the enemy and make my brother happy.” He decided to join the battle and went to Ravana’s court and told him his resolve. Ravana was relieved and he embraced his brother. “Listen, my dear, the background of this war. In retaliation to Rama, for disfiguring our sister Surppanakha, I abducted Rama’s wife, Sita. I kept her in the garden here and Rama and his monkey warriors have made a dyke to cross the ocean and have come here to fight with us. They killed several mighty warriors such as Prahasta. I fought with them and at one stage they could have killed me in the battle, but they set me free out of pity. I am ashamed of that and that is why I woke you up to kill those humans and Vanaras.”

Hearing this, Kumbhakarna replied: “I hear you loud and clear. If one does not know how to see the good from the bad, he must listen to wise people when they advise them. If he does not heed to their words, how can there be good happening to him? Our brother Vibhishana pleaded with you to return Sita to Rama, but you did not listen. Instead, you kicked him out of the country! I think that is the beginning of all the decline for you. If you have good advisers who would consider the various aspects of time, four alternatives, and six principles in deliberating on any topics, you will be successful; provided you listen to them. They will analyze the situation strategically considering the prowess of the enemy, and potential for negotiation, etc., before advising on the appropriate actions. But there are other types of ministers who would tell only to please a king and make him happy for a short time. They pretend to be friends but will bring disaster to the king. Even the deadly poison is better than such ministers. Deer get mesmerized by sweet music and stand still to their detriment. Flies get attracted to glittering fire and approach it without thinking about the consequences. Fish get absorbed in the taste of the bait and get caught by the fisherman. Desire is the root cause of all problems in the world. You got obsessed by Sita’s beauty and that is going to be the root cause of the decline of our clan. Disaster will not vanish from the life of one who is swayed by the pull of sensual pleasures. Those who have control over the senses do not fear anything. Some people know what is good and what is bad, but they go after the bad, anyway, because of the latent tendencies from their past life. But people can overcome this urge by heeding the words of wise people. I had already given you, my opinions. No one can stop what is bound to happen but know that Rama is not just human. He is the ultimate truth, Lord Narayana, taken birth as Rama. I had mentioned this to you before, but you did not listen. I happen to see sage Narada when I was living near the Ashram of Nara Narayana. I prostrated at his feet and asked him where he was coming from. I wanted to know the happenings around the world as the sage is a world traveler who sees everything in real-time. Then he told me about the difficulties the world over, Ravana, due to your atrocities. The sage told me that the Devas went to Lord Vishnu requesting his help. But you can be killed only by a human and the Lord decided to take birth as a human being. I am certain that Rama is Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, and we should fear for our life. So, let us take refuge in him. Let us extoll his virtues all the time, mentally and physically, in words and deeds. He is easily pleased by devotion, and we still have time to please him. Devotion is the only way to liberation and without devotion, any work will be futile. Know that Lord Vishnu has taken innumerable incarnations, but the Avatar of Rama is special. Just by chanting Rama’s name, moksha is possible. Even Lord Siva chants Rama’s name. Rama’s name is the boat that can take us across the ocean of samsara. Let us chant his name and seek refuge at his feet. Let us get rid of our bondages of desire and delusion. Wise men of discrimination keep his form in their minds all the time, chant his name and tell his stories in Satsang.  He is bliss personified and let us access that bliss.”

Hearing the wise words of Kumbhakarna, Ravana was outraged. “I did not wake you up to get your sermon! You may go back and continue your sleep happily while your brother is in trouble. You are a smart fellow advising your brother without even thinking that he is your king. I will live the life of a mendicant under your advice when such a time comes. But now if you care, take your weapon and fight for me.” Hearing Ravana, Kumbhakarna decided to fight, thinking that getting killed by Rama is a blessing in disguise. “That way I will be freed of these worldly births and deaths.”

He jumped up with a roar and got ready to fight. He lifted a huge spear weighing thousand tons and went into combat. Vanaras ran hither and thither seeing this mountain of a Rakshasa charging at them. “He is reaching the sky and he resembles a moving mountain”, exclaimed someone. Seeing him being compassionate to Vibhishana, Rama asked him his background. Vibhishana explained: “This is my elder brother Kumbhakarna. He is very powerful and intelligent. He is a terror to the Devas, but very much interested in his sleep and food. If he did not have these weaknesses, he would be invincible by anyone.”

Vibhishana prostrated at his elder brother’s feet and begged for his mercy and blessings. “When I advised Ravana to return Sita, he kicked me out wielding his sword. I escaped with four of my confidants and sought refuge at Rama’s feet.” Kumbhakarna embraced his brother and told him to continue to serve Rama. He caressed him lovingly and said: “You are a blessed fellow. Serve Rama and live on this earth for a long time. You are destined to protect our clan. I heard from Sage Narada that you are dear to Lord Narayana. Now you go to Rama.” He bid him goodbye.  Vibhishana wept and returned to Rama.

Kumbhakarna started beating up the Vanaras and no one could stop him. He would get hold of several mighty monkeys in one stretch and crush them in no time. Sugriva threw a large mountain at Kumbhakarna, and he took it on his chest easily. Kumbhakarna shot a spear at Sugriva and that fainted him and he fell on the ground. Kumbhakarna walked victoriously and the Vanara ladies started wailing. They treated him with flowers, sandal pastes, and freshwater to wake him up. Suddenly Sugriva got up and fought back more ferociously. He attacked the Rakshasa with his bare hands and injured his nose and ears. He came back to battle with a bloody face and Lakshmana showered him with arrows as if it were a heavy rainfall on a mountain. Kumbhakarna would catch a bunch of Vanaras and put them in his mouth and soon they will find their way out through his ears and nose. He repeated this a few times, and finally decided to leave Lakshmana and fight Rama. Immediately Rama shot his arrow and his right hand fell along with the spear. With his left hand, Kumbhakarna continued the fight admirably, and several thousand Vanaras were sent to Yama’s abode. He picked up a mountain and attacked Rama and it was stopped by Rama using Indra’s arrow.  Then Rama cut off his legs using two arrows that flew in a semicircular path. Then Rama filled the asura’s mouth with several arrows at once and then used a special arrow to cut his head off. Kumbhakarna’s head fell at the gate of the city and the body in the ocean.

Shuka’s Story

Shuka was a great Brahmana who was leading a Vanaprastha life in the forest doing all the prescribed Yagnas to please the Devas. He was known as someone who is working against the Asuras and Vajradamshtra, a Rakshasa, who sought ways to bring him to their camp. Sage Agastya came to visit Shuka, and he was invited to have lunch there. The sage went for taking a bath in the river before the meal and the Rakshasa took this opportunity to trick Shuka. He came to Ashram in the guise of the sage and told him that he would like to eat meat as he has not eaten meat for a while. He wanted to eat the meat of a goat and Shuka agreed to appease the guest. Shuka’s wife also agreed to cook a special dish for the sage. Vajradamshtra disguised again, this time as Shuka’s wife. ‘She’ served a dish made of human flesh to the sage. Sage Agastya could recognize the meat as human flesh and he got infuriated. He cursed Shuka to live on earth eating human flesh as a Rakshasa. Shuka was surprised at Sage’s wrath and asked him what his shortcomings were, as a host. “You only asked me for a meat dish, and I served it. Now you are cursing for a favor I did as per your request!” Now the sage was confused and asked Shuka what transpired.

Shuka told him: “After you left for taking a dip in the river, you came back and requested me to serve you some meat dishes as you have not eaten meat for a while.” The sage thought for a while, and he understood what happened. “Oh! Shuka! We both were cheated by the Asuras. I was a fool to curse you hurriedly without knowing the full story. Unfortunately, I cannot take back my curse. But you are a man of truth and I bless you with redemption from the curse. Ravana will abduct Sita, and you will be serving Ravana then. You will be one of his confidants and he will send you to Rama as a messenger. You will convey Rama’s message to Ravana and even advise him on the principles of Self. Then you will be dropping all the qualities of a Rakshasa and will become dear to Devas again.”

Malyavan Advises Ravana.

After Shuka left Ravana, Malyavan, his grandfather, his mother Kaikasi’s father, came to see Ravana. He was welcomed and they exchanged pleasantries. “My dear Ravana, I would like to tell you something for your good. After listening to those, you may do as you please. These days, I sense several bad omens in Lanka since the arrival of Sita. Thunders in the sky are untimely and blood is raining from the clouds. Idols consecrated in the temples are shaken and our Goddess, Kali is projecting her canine teeth and laughing at us. Cows are delivering donkey calves and the mice fight cats. Snakes and eagles are fighting. Yama, the God of death is seen everywhere in his dark and strange attire. The time seems to be preparing for disasters to strike. Seeing all these, I am asking you to please try to be peaceful. Please return Sita Devi and ask Rama’s forgiveness. Raman is Lord Vishnu, and he will pardon you. Yogis’ crossover the ocean of samsara by seeking refuge at the feet of Rama. You also develop devotion in your mind and protect your clan. I am telling you about this truth for your good.”

Hearing his grandfather’s advice, Ravana was not pleased with all. “Rama is just a human, and you want us to respect him, why? He has sought help from monkeys to fight us. Is that not laughable? Did Rama ask you to come and advise me like this? At this old age, you better go back to your palace and rest.”

The War Begins.

Both sides were ready for a war. Seeing Ravana, Rama was engulfed by rage. Ravana had ten heads with crowns and a body as strong as that of the demon, Vritra. Rama took the bow from Lakshmana and shot at Ravana, destroying all his ten crowns and the ceremonial umbrellas. Ravana got down and smiled weirdly at Rama with fear. The warriors carried different kinds of weapons and stood in various war formations and started fighting. Mace, swords, spears, pillars, bows, and other sharp objects were ready in their hands. Drummers and pipe players were on hand to encourage the warriors on both sides. Amongst the Rakshasas, Prahasta managed the West tower and Vajradamshtra oversaw the South tower. Meghanada looked after the West tower. Dasavakthra (Ravana) himself managed the North tower.  In the Vanara army, Nila oversaw the West gate. Angada at the South gate and Hanuman stood at the East gate. Rama, along with Lakshmana and Sugriva stood at the North gate. Several thousand weapons started hitting each other, and dust, noise, and commotion filled the battlefield. A large group of monkeys surrounded the city of Lanka and destroyed the buildings and facilities using their big weapons. They destroyed the walls and trenches around the city. Arrows rained incessantly and swords and discuses killed many soldiers on both sides. In the night, Ravana sent out spies under the leadership of Shardoola, to assess the opponent’s strength and the Vanaras caught hold of them and started beating them up. Hearing the furor, Rama came to the scene and set them free. They went back to Ravana and told him about Rama’s compassion. They advised him to surrender, just as Shuka did.

Ravana decided to meet with Sita in the garden. Vidyujihva, a magician created a fake head resembling Rama and a bow like Rama’s.  Ravana took this severed head and the bow to Sita and told her that Rama was defeated and was killed. Sita fainted at once and Ravana left the garden. Sarama, Vibhishana’s wife, consoled Sita. “Do not be dejected. This is just magic played by the Rakshasa. You are going to hear good news in four days. Your Lord is going to kill Ravana.” Sita was calmed listening to Sarama’s words of solace.

Angada Meets Ravana

Angada, the prince of Kishkindha, went to Ravana as commanded by Rama to give him still another chance to harbor peace. “Bring Sita to me and apologize, or else get ready to fight with me. You seem to be sitting behind closed doors but be assured I will destroy everything, and my arrows are ready to kill you. Can you hear the tremoring of my bow? You must be hearing celebrations as well. Aren’t you ashamed of what you have done?’ Hearing Rama’s message from Angada, Ravana asked his warriors to kill the messenger. As they came to attack him, Angada picked them up in his hands and threw them afar. Then he wrecked the palace before jumping up and leaving the scene.

The War of Rakshasas and Vanaras

Vanaras under the leadership of Kumudan, Nalan, Gajan, Dhanyan, Gavayan, Gavakshan, and Hanuman went and destroyed the walls and filled the trenches with the debris so that they could pass by easily. They carried huge rocks and trees and attacked the Rakshasa warriors and they retorted using their weapons, such as heavy maces, pillars, swords, and discuses, etc. In the war field, sounds of horses, elephants, chariots, drums, pipes, crying of warriors were heard continuously. Celestial beings, Siddha, Gandharva, Apsara, Kinnara, Kim Purusha, Uraga, Guhyaka, Vidyadhara, and groups of sages such as Narada were lined up in the sky on their air chariots, to witness the great war.

Indrajit fought Angada one on one. Angada killed his charioteer and brought another chariot immediately. Jambumali, a mighty warrior fought with Hanuman using his spear. Hanuman destroyed his chariot and killed him with a roar. Prahasta and Sugriva fought while Nila faced Nikumbha. Lakshmana fought Viroopaksha, while Rama fought with ten mighty warriors, and they all reached the Yama’s abode in no time.

The use of Naga Astra

Vanaras were victorious by that evening and the Sun was about to set in the sea. Indrajit hid in the sky after getting defeated by Angada. He sent out a Naga Astra on Vanaras and hypnotized everyone as if they were tied by an unseen knot. He boasted that he has won everyone including Humans and Vanaras. Sages, celestial beings, and even Vibhishana were sad hearing this claim. Then the gigantic Garuda, the archenemy of Nagas, landed there, and immediately the effect of the Naga Astra was gone and the Vanaras were freed. Rama blessed the bird.  Vanaras were more enthusiastic in fighting with the enemy. They picked more trees and rocks to attack the Rakshasas. Ravana was sitting in the palace calmly, thinking that his son Indrajit had killed all the Vanaras. But suddenly they appeared with the trees and rocks! They challenged him to come out and fight. Ravana was outraged and decided to send a ferocious fighter Dhumraksha, and his army to fight the Vanaras.

The Killing of Dhumraksha, Akampana, etc.

“Kill those Humans and Vanaras and return victorious”, he told Dhumraksha. The Rakshasa went to fight with Hanuman and a fierce battle ensued. Elephants, horses, and chariots were running in both directions and all kinds of weapons were used to kill the opponents. Several warriors died and streams of blood started flowing all over. Hanuman brought a small mountain and threw it on the Rakshasas. Dhumraksha jumped out of his chariot with a large sword. His chariot and horses were destroyed immediately. The Rakshasa hit Maruti with mace and that got hanuman outraged. Hanuman threw another hill on Dhumraksha, and he was killed instantly. Rakshasa ladies started moaning and Vanaras celebrated Hanuman’s victory.

Ravana sent out Vajradamshtra, a powerful demon to the battle. He approached the city through the Southern gate and met with Angada. Vanaras used trees and rocks again to kill scores of Rakshasas. Several Vanaras got killed from wounds inflicted by swords and arrows. Rakshasas lost a big set of mighty soldiers as well. Blood started flowing all over and headless bodies started dancing in the field. Angada finished Vajradamshtra with a sword and his head joined the several others in the stream of blood.

Hearing about Vajradamshtra, Ravana sent Akampana, another great fighter to face Hanuman. He reached the battlefield through the East tower and got killed by Maruti. Everyone praised Hanuman’s prowess and Ravana started trembling with fear. Ravana looked at the Vanara army that was spread from Rameswaram to Lanka, including several of them on the freshly constructed dyke. He noticed that almost all forts are destroyed, and he decided to bring in Prahasta, the fiercest among the Rakshasa warriors.

Ravana asked for Prahasta to come and asked him: “How come there are no real fighters available when I need them? The monkeys are killing all our warriors and I cannot sit quietly seeing their death. Either you or my brother will have to fight; otherwise, I will jump in myself. Prahasta agreed to fight and called his four ministers, Kambhahanu, Mahanadan, Durmukha, and Samunnathan who have control over one-fourth of the Lanka army. They entered the battlefield through the Western tower. Nila, son of Agni along with the Vanara warriors killed several Rakshasas. But Vanaras also lost several of their warriors from the severe fight of the Prahasta brigade. Several elephants and horses also died and the blood on the battlefield flew like a small river. Jambava killed Kambhahanu and Durmukha. Nila killed Mahanadan and Samunnathan and finally Prahasta, at a duel with him. Ravana was blinded with rage hearing the death of his commander in chief.

Tying up the Messenger Shuka

Shuka went to Sugriva, as commanded by Ravana to withdraw his support for Rama. “The great Rakshasa king Ravana has asked me to convey this message to you. You are a great warrior and the king of Vanaras. As you are the son of Indra, you are like a brother to me, and we are not enemies. What is your concern if I had abducted Rama's wife Sita? Please go back to Kishkindha along with your army. You may know that Lanka is more prosperous than heaven, and it is not accessible even to Devas. You know, these human beings cannot fight and the Vanaras are weak. Why do you want to fight with me unnecessarily?”

Hearing these words of Shuka, the Vanaras got mad and started beating him up with their fists and Shuka cried loudly. “Oh! Rama! Please save me! I am just a messenger and killing a messenger is not dharma. Please ask these monkeys to leave me alone.” Hearing this Rama asked the monkeys to untie him. He told Sugriva what his message to Ravana should be: “Tell him that he would be killed just as the mighty Vanara, Bali was killed. He will be destroyed along with his children for the grave sin of abducting Sita.” They tied up Shuka again, and Rama told the Vanaras, not to let him free until he tells them to do so. Ravana heard about this and was disappointed.

Setubandhanam, Construction of the Dyke to Cross the Ocean.

Rama sat down with Vibhishana, and Lakshmana, and other Vanaras to discuss ways of crossing the ocean. “I ask all of you to come up with ideas for crossing the ocean.” They opined unanimously that it is a good idea to approach Varuna, the God of the Seas to help out by making a way for them to walk across. Hearing their suggestion, Rama faced Eastward and spread Darbha grass on the ground, and prostrated Varuna. Rama, the Lord of the three worlds, sat there in meditation for three days and nights. But Varuna did not appear. Rama was outraged and yelled at Lakshmana: “Bring me the bow and arrows. I will show my valor and teach him a lesson. If he does not create a path for us by parting the water, I will dry up the ocean at once. Varuna, it was my ancestors who created you and gave you the name Sagara. I want the Vanaras to walk across the ocean and if you do not do what is required, you will be destroyed.”

He warned the universe about what would happen if the ocean dried up. The earth, forest, and mountains started trembling out of fear. The sun lost its glitter and the sea waves started to become intense. All the wild fishes, crocodiles, and gigantic whales were frightened. Suddenly the God of the Seas appeared with precious stones in his hands. He kept them at Rama’s feet and prostrated. He extolled Rama’s grace and magnanimity chanting a stuti. He begged for Rama’s protection and compassion. He pleaded with Rama, who was enraged at his lack of cooperation.

“Lord, protect me. I am existing because of you, and you are the reason behind the whole gamut of creation. In the primordial time, you created the five basic elements, and they are Tamasic, dull, by nature. They are just the matter, without any life in them. You created me even more Tamasic and who can change that nature?  It is difficult to get rid of the lethargic nature of any created being. How can I know you, the inert and innocent being that fills the whole universe? I know, it is appropriate for dull-witted students like me to get beaten up by the teacher so that we may learn something. I guess usage of a short stick is apt for making mischievous cows behave. I understand that it is your dharma to bring beings like us in line. I seek refuge at your feet fully knowing that there is no other go for me. Oh! Rama, I will show you the way to Lanka without delay. Be kind to me and bless me.”

Rama replied: “I have already pulled an arrow from the quiver and that cannot be futile. Show me a suitable target for it to strike.” Varuna told Rama: “Lord, in the North, on my banks, there is a lovely place, but infested with sinful Rakshasas who are always making trouble to the world. That place is an ideal target for you to strike.”  Rama shot the arrow, and the area was cleared off the culprits, and that place became a sought-after city after that. Then Varuna told Rama that it was safe to build a dyke across the ocean without difficulty for Nala, the chieftain of the workforce. After all, Nala is the son of the celestial architect, Vishwakarma. As Nala got ready to build the dyke, the ocean receded and that made the work go smoothly.

Rama called Sugriva, Nala, and Lakshmana to deliberate on the methods of construction. Gigantic monkeys brought big pieces of rock and wood to build the dyke. The length of the dyke was one hundred yojanas and it was ten yojanas wide. While the Vanaras were busy at work, Rama did oblations at the seashore for Lord Siva, after naming the area, Rameswaram, for the prosperity and good fortune of the world. He declared that anyone who goes there and sees the dyke and does pooja to Lord Siva at Rameswaram will be redeemed of all his sins. He will attain moksha. Those who do the poojas at Rameswaram and travels to Varanasi and takes a ritual bath in the river Ganga, and return with some water from the holy river, for conducting pooja at Rameswaram again, will attain moksha. He will be liberated while living!

The construction work progressed well with fourteen yojanas on the first day.  On the second day, they did better with twenty yojanas and the third day with twenty-one yojanas. Forth day, it was twenty-two yojanas and twenty-three yojanas on the fifth day.  In just five days, Nala and his team completed the work of building a hundred yojana long dyke in the middle of an ocean.  All the Vanaras gathered over the dyke and started walking towards the island. Rama climbed up Hanuman’s shoulder and Lakshmana on Angada’s.

Rama went up the Subela Mountain and observed the city of Lanka and found that it was magnificent like Indra’s Amaravati. The golden flag tower was beautiful, and the palaces were as opulent as the Kailas Mountain. There were weapon storages seen full of various kinds of arms. Ravana was sitting on a golden throne that was embedded with precious stones and diamonds. Young maidens were fanning the king with colorful fans and Ravana sat there with his ten heads decorated with golden crowns. Rama asked the Vanaras to untie Shuka and send him to Ravana to convey a message. Shuka took the message from Rama and went straight to Ravana.

Ravana and Shuka

Ravana asked: “Why are you so late in returning? Were you caught by the Vanaras? Did they insult you? Why are you looking so tired? Tell me all about it without any hesitation.!

Shuka replied: “Oh! King! You are victorious always. Let me tell you some desirable things to you by which you can even attain moksha. When I reached there at the seashore and gave your message to Sugriva, the Vanaras caught hold of me and they were about to kill me when I cried out for help calling Rama’s name. Hearing this, Lord Rama, compassionately told them that “he is a messenger, and we should not kill him, and they did not bother me after that. I came to Lanka, walking along with the Vanaras and Rama sent a stern message for you. “Return Sita immediately or get ready to fight. Note that we are ready for either option. If you think you have what it takes to fight me, let us do that right away.  Be forewarned that I will destroy and crush your Lanka and your army in no time with my powerful arrows. If you are a powerful Rakshasa, come and fight with me.” is the message. Your brother Vibhishana is with them along with the mighty Vanaras and Lakshmana, Rama’s brother. There are Vanaras with them so gigantic that when they walk the earth trembles. There are such innumerable fearless warriors in their army.

Hear me about some of their warriors. Nila, son of Agni, is their commander who is standing there with his tail raised and ready to charge with a roar. Angada is the prince of Kishkindha, the son of Bali. He is like a moving mountain, and he beats his tail on the ground as he walks. Near him, see Hanuman, son of Vayu. He is dear to Rama, your slayer. Then there are Swetan, Rambhan, Sarabhan, Maindan, Vividan, Vrindarakan, Nalan, and a whole host of wonderful warriors. There are sixty-seven crore such fighters in their army. They are Devas born on this earth along with the Lord to assist him in his Lila. Rama is Lord Vishnu and Sita Devi is Yoga Maya. Lakshmana is none other than Anantha.

Oh! King, think why you are having this rivalry towards them. Our body is made of five elements and with some complex processes, we become a conglomeration of skin, muscle, blood, bone, urine, feces, etc. We get immersed in the actions we do, which are separated as sins and virtues and our ego gets attached to them. Our Jiva gets swayed by the dualities such as pleasure and pain. We end up considering our self as the body and do actions as if under a delusion. Such a deluded Jiva will repeatedly undergo births and deaths. The only way to avoid sorrow and the cycle of births and deaths is to get rid of your pride in your body. Think of yourselves as Atman. Get immersed in that thought. Do not get attached to your wife, children, position, and wealth. Even if you have a body of a pig, horse, etc., you have pleasure and pain experiences. So will you in hell and heaven. But when you develop discrimination, you may end up being born in a Brahmana family, that too in Bharatha. Then, for the wise one, there will be no interest in seeking pleasure. You are the son of sage Pulastha, and you are a Brahmana by birth. Moreover, you are well recognized in the three worlds as the topmost in performing, Tapas, the penance to achieve your goals.  How come you are still swayed by the desire for pleasure? Please discard your desire for pleasure at this moment and seek refuge with Rama. Rama is indeed the Paramatma, the one without a second, the non-dual reality. In doing so, you will attain Lord Vishnu’s abode. If not, it is a downfall for you and that will lead you to hell. What I just told you is for your good; you may check with your well-wishers. When you chant Rama’s name, you can attain moksha. Satsang and meditation unto his lotus feet are sure to lead you to the path of moksha.”

Hearing this discourse from Shuka, Ravana’s eyes became red with rage and yelled at him: “You are just a servant of mine and advising as if you are my guru! How audacious! You have done some service for me in the past and that is the only reason why I am sparing you now. Get out of my face! I do not have the patience to listen to the nonsense you are blabbering. If you stand here even a moment more, your death will be with my sword. Shuka was frightened and he ran away from there and took refuge at his house.
